Who are WC3?

WC3 is a French punk band that burst onto the scene in 1979 as “A 3 Dans Les WC“. Their sound was likened to iconic bands like The Stranglers and Marquis De Sade. Known for their underground roots and electrifying live shows, WC3 eventually signed a major deal with CBS for a three-album contract.

The members of WC3 consist of Reno Isaac (vocals, guitar), Eric (bass), Gégène (drums), Jeannot (guitar, 1978-79), and Françoise (keyboards). The band’s spirited performance instantly caught attention, showcasing their distinct  punk-rock style.

WC3’s music pushed punk to it’s limits with a clear inclusion of synths along the same playful lines as the B52’s & Polyrock.

The Story of WC3

In 1978, WC3 emerged during a punk festival in Lesdins, Picardy. After a whirlwind start, WC3 signed a five-year contract with CBS in 1981 and rebranded themselves. The transformation to WC3 marked a new chapter, amplifying their identity.

The release of their EP “Poupée Be.Bop” faced a hiccup due to the track “Captain Valium” but the band’s tenacity prevailed, and the EP emerged as a remarkable debut.

The journey wasn’t without challenges. Despite their promising sound, CBS failed to adequately promote WC3, leading to tension and poor sales. On April 20, 1984, WC3 embarked on a national tour, commencing in Grenoble. Despite the venue not being at capacity and the challenges posed by their departing record company, the band displayed unwavering determination.

During the concert, Janine unexpectedly left the stage, leaving her fellow musicians to continue without her. Little did they know that this performance would mark the end of their journey together.

Tragically, Janine was discovered unresponsive later that night and passed away in a Grenoble hospital. The band fulfilled their contract but faced a devastating blow in 1984. The loss of a vital member coupled with a tumultuous experience with CBS marked the end of WC3.

Olivier Hodasava, an ardent fan of WC3, was present at the concert that night. He vividly recalls meeting Janine after the show, capturing a fleeting moment of interaction before her untimely demise

Hodasava reflects on Janine’s decision and delves into the historical backdrop of the French music scene of the ’70s and ’80s. Through his retelling, a portrait of Janine emerges, intricately woven with the essence of that era.

The Legacy of WC3

WC3’s story becomes a microcosm of the broader music landscape during that time, encompassing the chaos of the Punk Years, the emergence of New Wave, and the dynamics between artists and record labels.

Despite a short-lived career, their impact and sound remains strong and unique.
