Baxter Dury was born in 1971. A musician and the author of the memoir Chaise Longue. Son of Ian Dury, frontman of the Blockheads, and artist Betty Rathmell. In 1977, he appeared on the cover of New Boots and Panties, his father’s debut solo album. He was just six years old. Baxter comments clearly on his past.
Baxter Dury released his first EP in 2002, a full 25 years after appearing on the cover of his father’s album. Since then, he’s carved out a consistent career defined by spoken-word vocals, synth-driven arrangements and a dry, observational style.

His latest release, Allbarone, includes the single “Return of the Sharp Heads” featuring J Grrey. It’s a playful, confident track with a driving bassline and a shimmering, understated melody. Built for summer, it highlights just how comfortable and in command Dury has become in his sound.
“The succession people, the absolute return of the sharp heads”
The track has this building sense of doom with vocals from JGrrey relieving the build. Her sound sits so well in this mix. This was the first we had heard of her. This track gives so many reasons to check more of her work out. Floating vocals offset the low cynicism of Dury making the track this catch and throw operation dotted with electronic breaks between.
The rising close of the song with the arpeggiated notes and high-pitched beeps as the vocals take the focus.
“Gold Lapels, Stop That Laughing”.
The track sits nicely across electronic, pop and psychedelic without sounding clichéd. No easy feat. Baxter drops ridiculous Sleaford Mod worthy lines in his iconic strong accent and witty timing.
