Broadcast’s Final Release: Details on Distant Call & Spell Blanket Demo Collections
Broadcast, the pioneering British electronic band from Birmingham, emerged in 1995. Trish Keenan and James Cargill, the group’s founders, developed a signature sound by integrating 1960s psychedelia with cutting-edge electronic elements.
This blend of psychedelic pop and avant-garde styles was further enriched by their use of unique, eclectic samples, establishing a textured sonic landscape.
Their influential albums, including “The Noise Made by People” (2000), “Haha Sound” (2003), and “Tender Buttons” (2005), marked their progression into increasingly experimental musical realms.
The band’s direction took a significant turn with the untimely death of Keenan in 2011 from pneumonia, which was a complication of an earlier H1N1 infection.
Following this, James Cargill focused on preserving and continuing Broadcast’s legacy, notably through the release of archival materials such as the soundtrack for “Berberian Sound Studio” in 2013.
Today, Broadcast’s impact is still felt strongly within psychedelic and electronic music circles, influencing a new generation of musicians and fans alike.
Their engaging live performances and innovative multimedia collaborations have secured their place in the avant-pop genre.
Warp Records Announces New Collections
Warp Records has officially announced the release of two Broadcast demo collections, marking what will be the final issues from the band. The releases provide a glimpse into the creative process of the late Trish Keenan and her collaborator James Cargill. Both Digital and physical versions are available 28th of September 2024
First Release: Spell Blanket
The first collection, titled “Spell Blanket“, is set for release on May 3. It features demos crafted by Keenan and Cargill from 2006 to 2009, during the development of their planned fifth album. Tragically, Keenan passed away in 2011 at the age of 42, halting further production.
Second Release: Distant Call
Following in September, “Distant Call” will be released on the 28th. This compilation includes demos from tracks that featured on earlier albums like “Haha Sound”, “Tender Buttons”, and “The Future Crayon”. Additionally, it contains two early demos, “Come Back to Me” and “Please Call to Book”, which Cargill found subsequently. The latter demo is notable for its lyrics, contributed by fans as part of Broadcast’s “Let’s Write a Song” project.
