Dummy New Album Free Enenrgy Front Cover

Los Angeles-based band Dummy, composed of Alex Ewell, Emma Maatman, Nathan O’Dell, and Joe Trainor, is known for restless creativity and genre-defying sound. Emerging from the underground with a pair of cassette EPs in 2020, Dummy quickly garnered attention with their unique blend of motorik rhythms, minimal composition, and drone-pop aesthetics.

Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of influences—from the ’60s melodicism and ’90s UK noise pop to spiritual jazz and Japanese new age—their music offers a joyous alternative to the often brooding and dark tendencies of contemporary experimental and electronic music.

New Album Free Energy

With their upcoming album Free Energy, releasing on September 6th via Trouble In Mind Records, Dummy continues to push sonic boundaries. The lead single, “Nullspace” sums up the band’s approach, blending synths (specifically the Korg EM1″ and cut-up dreamy dance-pop, all while maintaining a critical edge in their exploration of modern life’s absurdities.

Dummy is a band has been continuously evolving their sound from earlier singles like “Pool Dizzy“.

Their most recent output being truly original and compelling. Free Energy, marks an evolution and integration of signature pop, intense psychedelic tones, and surprisingly danceable. The band dove deep into the potential of electronic inclusion with textures, vocal loops, sampling, and droning sounds.

“Nine Clean Nails” is a favourite here and it stood out well as a single. The album features plenty of collaborators such as artists Oakland-based saxophonist Cole Pulice and Jen Powers of Powers/Rolin Duo, adding layers of electroacoustics.

Not many bands can find that clean blend of wall of noise, catchy pop chorus, and infectious drumming but Dummy have done so in style.
