Eco Skate Sneakers & Sustainable Skateboarding

Eco skate sneakers are here, however skateboarding exists in a paradox, as highlighted by Kerra Maddern. It’s both a symbol of freedom and a contributor to environmental strain.

While the act of skating is human-powered and emissions-free, the culture around it—fast fashion, deforestation for maple decks, and energy-intensive skate parks—tells a more complicated story.

A growing body of research highlights how skateboarding takes place in what researchers call “grey spaces”—environments shaped by both pollution and potential. Yet, there’s also progress. From bamboo boards and recycled wheels to reimagined concrete parks and eco-conscious footwear, skaters are beginning to align their passion with sustainability.

Skateboard covers this quite well. They outline all the different materials and practices you can take to reduce your skating impact on the environment, with sustainable decks being first on the list. Reclamation of skateboard deck wood is a super interesting part of the sustainable skating story. However, today we are going to focus on sustainable skate shoes.

Vegan Eco-friendly Trainers

Cariuma has built a reputation for delivering vegan, eco-conscious sneakers without sacrificing comfort or quality. But not just sneakers. They also create incredible eco skate sneakers. As of 2025, 65% of the brand’s sneaker line is fully vegan, incorporating materials like organic cotton, bamboo, and sugarcane. These choices reduce pesticide use, cut carbon emissions, and support regenerative farming practices.

Instead of petroleum-based foams, Cariuma opts for mamona oil, a plant-based alternative used in their bio-foam insoles. Upper materials include recycled PET from plastic bottles, while Bluesign-certified dyes ensure the absence of toxic chemicals throughout production.

Cariuma’s commitment to clean materials lands them on sustainability guides all across the web. With great designs for both men and women, these sneakers appeal to anyone looking to make better fashion choices without compromising a half decent look at the same time.

As of July 2025 there only seems to be a few pairs left so it may be worth bookmarking their product page.

Sustainable Skating? Try Eco Skate Sneakers

At the intersection of performance and ethics is the Skategoat C25 PRO, Cariuma’s flagship skate shoe. Co-designed with pro skater Leandre Sanders, the model features cupsole construction, slip-resistant rubber, LWG Gold-rated suede, and recycled mesh linings—components chosen not just for their durability, but for their low environmental impact.

The insoles combine cork and bio-based foam, offering comfort without synthetic overload. Even the laces are made from recycled plastic (rPET). Every pair sold contributes to Cariuma’s reforestation project in Brazil, with over 2 million trees planted since 2020.

With skate shoes built for both the park and the planet, Cariuma continues to be included in plenty of sustainable lists, features and put forward more and more by the industry itself.

A Sidenote on Sustainable Skateboarding

A really great piece by Sam Haddad for huckmag breaks down the difficulties surrounding making skating sustainable. We didn’t really consider just how concrete intensive skate parks are. As an negative contributor, skate parks never entered our mind. Such a simple point kind of represents the fog that there is when it comes to forward-thinking skate policy, if that’s even a thing.

To be honest, when anyone here at Halftone Magazine started skating, there wasn’t even a consideration of sustainable skate sneakers, products, design or builds. You were lucky to even have a place to skate so you didn’t really give a second thought about the materials. Placement or location of newly built parks is a different story all together.

Generally, we weren’t exactly seeking sustainable fashion out because it was in short supply, it wasn’t advertised and if it was, it didn’t reach us. The thinking around skating and sustainability always existed in ways. Good etiquette around cleaning the spots you’ve skated, with the demographic typically being punk-ish planet conscious people with strong attitudes towards the earth, climate and nature.

It’s an interesting topic we hope to cover in more detail in the future.

Sustainable sneakers are designed to reduce environmental impact across their entire lifecycle—from raw materials to production, packaging, and disposal.

Are big brands like Nike and adidas sustainable?

Mainstream brands are making progress, but they’re often criticized for greenwashing. While Nike and adidas have launched “eco” lines, questions remain about their overall supply chains and labor practices.

Transparency and third-party certifications—like those held by Cariuma, VEJA, and SAYE—are stronger indicators of true sustainability.

What should I look for when buying sustainable sneakers?

  • Third-party certifications (e.g. FSC, Global Recycled Standard, Bluesign)
  • Clear materials list with renewable or recycled inputs
  • Ethical labor standards, like WRAP certification or B Corp status
  • End-of-life options, such as take-back programs or recyclability
  • Transparent reporting and impact tracking (like tree planting or emissions offsetting)

Are sustainable sneakers more expensive?

Not necessarily. While some eco-brands sit at a green premium price point, others—like Cariuma, Komrads, and Tropicfeel—offer competitive pricing without compromising ethics.

Considering their durability and long-term environmental value, they’re often the smarter investment.
