Gilla Band release new single “Sports Day”
The Irish post-punk / noise rock band Gilla Band, formerly known as Girl Band, have released a brand-new single “Sports Day”. Released on Rough Trade Records in February 2023, Sports Day follows Gilla Band’s latest album “Most Normal”.
Nearly 10 years have passed since the release of The Early Days EP which catapulted the band into the minds of international audiences. This and Gilla Band’s staggering performance on KEXP to cement their energy. Stevie Chicks highlights how “No wave was the primary inspiration” in the beginning.
Despite this being Gilla Band’s source, their output has drastically developed since. Exemplified through comparisons between earlier tracks on France 98, such as “Handswaps“. Gilla band have grown alongside an array of diverse bands from Ireland. From the post punk styling of Fontaines DC to the shoe gaze / noise rock sound of Just Mustard and others. The latest Gilla Band tour stretches from New York to Poland, culminating with both Primavera Sound and Off Festival.
The new Gilla band release “Sports Day” taken from the Eight Fivers 7 inch single, comes with an accompanying visual video Directed by Michael Speed.
Covid granted Gilla Band the ability to delay deadlines in favour of experimentation. Rough Trade highlights how ‘They were free to rewrite and restructure and reinvent tracks they’d cut‘. So much so that heavy-handed hip-hop style production is seen as a “definite influence” to bassist Daniel Fox.
