Japanese television release new single “typhoon reggae police” – from upcoming album “automata exotica”.
Japanese Television, the space-surf-psych-rock quartet, is back with their latest single “Typhoon Reggae Police”, a track that promises a unique blend of heavy and wild sounds. This new release serves as a prelude to their much-anticipated second album, “Automata Exotica”, scheduled to hit the shelves on March 22, 2024, under Tip Top Recordings.
Inspiration and Recording Process
The single’s title is a nod to a demo cassette from Mark E. Smith’s autobiography ‘Renegade’, but the sound is more akin to a fusion of Link Wray’s instrumental surf rock and the style of Ahmad Zahir, Afghanistan’s legendary musical icon.
Recorded live to tape in Homerton over three intense, all-night sessions, the band collaborated with Kristian Bell of The Wytches to capture a raw, electric energy. Tim Jones, the guitarist, emphasizes their goal of creating a compact record: “We aimed for lean, tight songs, limiting ourselves to first or second takes with minimal overdubs. The result is pure, unadulterated energy.”
A Dive into "Typhoon Reggae Police"
“Typhoon Reggae Police” is an audacious blend of deep bass, catchy hooks, and jaunty notes, wrapped in an infectious energy. It’s a track that grows on the listener, evolving from a thunderous beginning to a brighter, percussive climax. As the song progresses, it escalates into a powerful, chaotic crescendo, showcasing Japanese Television’s ability to create an intense, immersive soundscape.

The upcoming album, “Automata Exotica”, is described as a combination of mechanical rhythms and heavy bass, marking a departure from their debut album “Space Fruit Vineyard”. This new album promises to be louder, bolder, and more raw, capturing the essence of the band’s unique sound.
