Flight B741 see’s King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard return to folky nihilism.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s 26th album, Flight b741, sees the Australian band embracing a more “primal, instinctual” sound. Moving away from the complex, concept-driven projects of recent years, the album taps into the “country-fried” 70s American rock and garage roots that originally defined their style.
With tracks like “Raw Feel” and “Daily Blues,” the band pairs upbeat, nostalgic riffs with darkly funny lyrics that explore themes of dissociation and global strife. The album is a raw, unfiltered and creative effort. As frontman Stu Mackenzie explains, Flight b741 is “about life and stuff,” offering a fun, freewheeling experience that feels like “a really fun weekend with your mates.”
The sound of King Gizzard's "Flight B741"
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s “Flight b741″ showcases their ability to shift genres, this time diving into 70s-inspired classic rock with added harmonica flair. The album moves from the shiny space rock of their previous releases to a sound that channels the likes of Steve Miller, The Band, and The Rolling Stones.
Kicking off with “Mirage City”, the album blends country rock with sci-fi themes, featuring a Skynyrd-like structure that breaks into a wild guitar and harmonica jam. Tracks like “Antarctica” and “Field of Vision” further pushes this retro rock sound, the former with a Stones-like groove and the latter nodding to T.Rex with its fuzzed-out guitars.
“Le Risque” stands out with a bouncing bassline and a raucous call-and-response, while “Daily Blues” closes the album with a sprawling, multi-part epic. The album is genuine and plays great homage to 70s rock, blending decent humour with dark subject matter.
