Laura Agnusdei

In 2014, she began her solo project, showcasing her adept use of different sound sources and creating a signature “Folk Soul” sound. Her debut EP, NIGHT/LIGHTS, released in 2017 on limited edition cassette via The Tapeworm label, was an impressive compositional solo project. Agnusdei’s music weaves together saxophone melodies and textured sonic landscapes, resulting in evocative emotional states.

Her debut album, Laurisilva, released in 2019 on The Wormhole WHO#17, invited listeners on an imaginary journey. This album uniquely blended wind instruments’ acoustic dimension with polymorphic electronic sounds, creating a captivating and mesmerizing musical habitat.

“Goro” is the latest addition to Laura Agnusdei’s expanding discography. Commissioned by Maple Death and Canicola Edizioni, the EP’s music was directly inspired by Italian author Pastoraccia’s debut graphic novel, “Quasi Nessuno Ha Riso Ad Alta Voce.” The EP beautifully merges noirish ambient, am-radio pop fantasy, lounge vibes, and organic proto-techno into a seamless sonic tapestry.

Throughout “Goro,” Laura Agnusdei skillfully balances atonal chimes, piano stabs, field recordings, and perfectly calibrated saxophone themes, resulting in moments that effortlessly transition between exploratory improvisations and well-crafted songs.

Each track on the EP offers a unique experience. “Matilde’s Lemon Dance” showcases Agnusdei’s voice and pastoral pads in a minimal techno ballad, while “Sasha” exudes a  playfulness. “Maciste, Wet Nights” introduces Fourth World electronics, spoken word, and saxophone vignettes.

The EP concludes with the epic 15-minute journey of “Pontelagoscuro,” driven by a graceful piano lead and location recordings that evoke the spirit of Gastr Del Sol.

“Goro” serves as a testament to Laura Agnusdei’s artistic growth, offering a serene distillation of past and future dreams. This remarkable EP is released on cassette/digital by Maple Death Records, with all tracks composed and performed by Laura Agnusdei. “Sasha” features a collaboration with Giulio Stermieri, who also contributes piano on “Pontelagoscuro.” The EP’s artwork draws inspiration from Pastoraccia’s graphic novel, while the music finds its roots in the eerie and unresolved atmosphere of “Quasi Nessuno Ha Riso Ad Alta Voce.”

Laura Agnusdei continues to astound and delight with her boundary-pushing music, leaving us here at Halftone Magazine eagerly awaiting future endeavours. Arguably, Laura is at the forefront of European underground music community. “Goro” demonstrates remarkable talent and artistic vision, solidifying her place as a captivating and innovative artist.
