Noise Rock Bands to look out for in 2023
Noise rock bands in 2023 may have transgressed since its foundations in the late 60s. The sound itself has changed and developed, being minimalised and maximised for effect the world over. From the1980s No Wave noise of Sonic Youth to Swan’s Michael Gira.
One thing is certain, that an appetite still exists for the distorted, harshness that it offers. In this article, we’ll highlight some amazing noise rock bands from 2023 worth keeping your eye on. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but we will update where possible with the latest tracks, albums and releases.
Gilla Band
The first noise rock band in 2023 we would like to feature is Gilla Band. With the release of their newest album “Most Normal“, Gilla Band are on their 2023 tour across the US & Europe. The Irish band previously known as Girl Band have been signed to Rough Trade since 2015.
What makes their specific brand of noise rock is the context. The band took a brief hiatus with Covid-19 breaking up their ability to record. Using the studio as an instrument is one such progression to their sound. Their latest release “Sports Day” is surely one of the top noise rock releases of 2023.
Gurriers
The next noise rock band we’d like to highlight from 2023 is Gurriers. They have certainly been making a name for themselves through some stellar live performances. Their latest release from 2023 “Approachable” saw them play Rough Trade Bristol.
Gurriers are also from Ireland and certainly pack a punch during live performances. Just take a look at their performance at Tilt, Dublin for insights.
Follow Gurriers on Instagram for more updates on their shows and releases.
Just Mustard
Maybe it’s more accurate to classify Just Mustard as a shoe gaze band. We’re not here to argue labels. After seeing the band live, we can attest to the focus on manipulating tones for rhythmic distortion to an incredibly endless and disorientating degree.
It’s no wonder the band’s latest release has been heralded from The Independent who describe “dense walls” of noise to The Telegraph stating “this noisy, wonderfully chaotic record“.
Shame
Shame for years now have been blending post-punk and noise rock in a danceable and appealing way. The first song “Dust on Trial” from their debut album “Songs of Praise” spelled out this intention clearly.
Shame’s latest album “Food for Worms” builds on their eclecticism while maintaining the same noise-rock sound. Tracks like “The Fall of Paul” and
“Orchid” is a stand-out track, blending folkish break-downs building to shrill guitars and an overpowering bass.
Upcoming gigs range from the EU & UK to the US and Canada. Notable shows include Shaky Knees Festival, The Regent Theatre, CA and more.
Model/Actriz
Model/Actriz is a noise rock band based in Brooklyn, New York fronted by Cole Haden.
Their newest album, “Dogsbody” was released on February 24, 2023. Standout tracks include “Slate”, “Mosquito” & “Maria”.
Based in Brooklyn, New York, Model/Actriz have already reached big audiences with shows booked at Dirk Fur Lounge in Portland, The Empty Bottle in Chicago & Racket in New York.
Oozing Wound
Oozing Wound are a noise rock band from Chicago, Illinois. With 6 albums to their name already, they’ve established themselves as the “fastest noise rock band”. Despite the labels,Oozing Wounds sound sways from metal to punk. Their newest album from 2023 ‘We Cater To Cowards’ is no exception. Their lead-off track ‘Bank Account Anxiety‘ really plays to their self described “rock-band wolf in metal sheep’s clothing” bio. Fans of Nirvana or Grunge in general will certainly enjoy their track ‘The Good Times (I Don’t Miss ‘Em’. Ultimately this is 100% a band worth following for tour dates in your area.
Wednesday
“Rat Saw God,” the fifth studio album by the American rock band Wednesday, is released on April 7, 2023. The album captures suburban mundanity. Wednesday, led by Karly Hartzman, delivers a collection of tracks worth owning on vinyl.
With tracks like “Hot Rotten Grass Smell” and the sprawling “Bull Believer,” the album kicks off with sonic explosion, ’90s shoegaze sounds lyrical prowess.
