Omni Album Souvenir

After a period of inactivity during the pandemic, Omni, an Atlanta-based trio, is making a powerful comeback with their latest album, “Souvenir.” This record, their fourth overall and second under the Sub Pop label, showcases a fresh, energetic sound that’s both sharp and impactful.

The Making of "Souvenir"

Omni’s members – guitarist Frankie Broyles, singer and bassist Philip Frobos, and drummer Chris Yonker – channeled their pent-up creative energy into this album. Each song stands out with distinct riffs, quick beats, and catchy melodies, reflecting the time and place of their creation. The album, aptly named “Souvenir,” is like a collection of musical snapshots, each track capturing a unique moment or feeling.

Standout Tracks and Collaborations

“Plastic Pyramid,” the album’s standout track, marks the band’s return post-lockdown. It’s a complex composition featuring Izzy Glaudini of Automatic, marking the first time Omni has collaborated with a guest vocalist. The opening track, “Exacto,” is another highlight, weaving intricate guitar and bass lines with Frobos’s sharp lyrics.

New Developments and Influences

“Souvenir” is notable for several firsts for Omni. Chris Yonker makes his debut as the full-time drummer, adding a new level of intensity to the album. The band also worked with Atlanta-based engineer Kristofer Sampson, who brought a new edge to their sound. Frobos’s vocals, more pronounced in this mix, draw inspiration from college radio rock bands like REM, the Cure, and Big Audio Dynamite, blending emotion with a touch of nostalgia.

A Mix of Humor and Emotion in Lyrics

The lyrics in “Souvenir” are a mix of humor and cryptic messages, a trademark of Omni’s style. Songs like “Granite Kiss” and “PG” combine dark and light humor, adding depth to the album’s overall feel.
